Zimbabwe : Zesa needs $200 million to add 100,000 homes to national grid

Wednesday, 08 June 2016 17:17

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (Zesa) said it needs $100 million to implement close to 138 new electrification projects in the country. These projects, according to Zesa’s spokesperson, Fulard Gwasira, will lead to 102,000 people being added to the national power grid.

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) is looking at increasing revenue flows through this new business, but we are being hampered by lack of liquidity challenges to provide the backbone infrastructure in the respective residential areas,” said Mr Gwasira.

ZETDC, Zesa’s subsidiary in charge power distribution and transport said it currently has some trouble raising the money needed to build infrastructures such as high and low-tension transmission lines. Fact is that the company has the reputation of a bad payer which drives away most investors. This is what prevented the raising of the $6.5 billion needed by the country to cut its power deficit.
