Morocco advocates democratization of photovoltaic energy

Thursday, 08 September 2016 16:53

Morocco wishes to democratize photovoltaic power.

Around 3.5 million people will benefit from the introduction of this source of energy to the country’s low-tension power network. Each building will have solar panels that will boost production, making it possible to even store excess energy,” said Abdelkader Amara, Minister of energy, mines, water and environment at the second edition of the Photovoltaica fair.

Moreover, the kingdom intends to develop various photovoltaic power plants of a capacity of about 50 MW. These, in addition to their eco-nature, will help reduce cost of energy for homes. The minister however indicated that to achieve this, regulatory measures, including the adoption of a ministerial decree, would need to be implemented.

Morocco aims for 52% of its demand in power to come from renewable, by 2030. It thus plans by then, to develop 10,000 MW of additional capacity, of which 4,560 MW of solar power.
