(Ecofin Agency) - In Nigeria, the National Council on Privatization (NCP) which is chaired by the country’s vice-president, Yemi Osinbajo, has approved the privatization of Afam’s first five power plants, according to Leadership. The privatization of the plants which have a total capacity of more than 1,100MW was proposed by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE).

According to Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity, the process aims to boost power production in Nigeria. The NCP also ordered for the privatization of power distribution company Yola.

With an output of about 4,000MW, Nigeria’s electricity demand stands at 12,000MW. Despite the deficit, a significant part of the country’s output is lost due to the bad state of transmission lines.
