During the next year, Egypt plans to increase its power output to 3000 MW from 2500 MW. Mohamed Shaker, Egypt’s minister of power told Reuters that this operation would end the energy deficit issue the country’s industrial sector has been facing for some years now. “We believe that power production will be better this summer than the last one. We intend to accelerate the implementation of existing projects so as to increase our output to 3000 MW from 2500 MW,” he said.
The drop in prices of oil and gas, combined with the surge in demand, led to a deficit thus making the country which was formerly an exporter to an importer of energy. To mitigate the impact of this phenomenon, administrative authorities prioritized domestic production thereby affecting heavy industries such as that of cement and metallurgy.
Improving this situation will also require an increase in gas production at the various power plants which have a production capacity of 32,000 MW. To this end, the government has already mobilized (rented) two floating units, for stocking and regasification allowing it to import liquid gas and process it into natural gas to supply its plants. A third terminal is to be added to the fleet by 2016.
It should be recalled that Egypt has already added 6,883 MW to its production capacity during the year.
