COP 21, a meeting where promises are backed by actions. Indeed, on December 7, French minister of foreign affairs Laurent Fabius announced that developed countries had already mobilized €10 billion of public funding to support an initiative driven towards the development of renewable energies in Africa.
Mr. Fabius who heads the Climate Change Talks COP 21 said the sum was the “amount required for the provision of 10 GW” of new clean power-production means by 2020, which happens to be goal of the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI).
Launched last week at the COP 21, this initiative aims to install a total of 300 GW of renewable energy-based facilities by 2030 through the mobilization of public as well as private funds.
In Africa, more than 600 million people lack access to electricity and the continent’s current total power output is 150 GW.
