Namibia’s public power utility NamPower, finalized with its South African counterpart Eskom, an agreement for the supply of 200 MW. This was announced by NamPower’s managing director Kahenge Simson Haulofu.
“Any additional supplies that may be requested will be negotiated as part of the-ahead market established under the Southern African Power Pool, and can be sourced from any utility which is prepared to sell energy on a non-firm basis, and as mentioned,” he said. Under a day-ahead contract, contracts are made between seller and buyer for the delivery of power the following day, the price is set and the trade is agreed.
NamPower is also about to close another deal which involves the provision of 44 MW from a wind station located in Luderitz. A call to tender for the development of 37 MW of renewable energy in the Hardap region should be launched soon.
All these initiatives are part of government’s efforts to plug power deficit. Other measures it launched include the substitution of fluorescent lamps with LED lamps; a million of economic lamps will be distributed to reduce demand in power by 30 MW.
