In Nigeria, Solar Nigeria project has allowed 49,000 homes to have access to power through solar energy. This was achieved in three months only. More than 14,000 homes among the beneficiaries of this project are located in the Northern states which are marked by a power deficit.
The program puts in contact domestic solar equipment providers and homes that are looking to obtain such equipment. Homes can either rent or buy the systems with an option to pay in tranches.
Solar Nigeria aims to establish a solar systems market. The program provided in 2015, at its pilot stage, a £1.5 million funding to 16 firms. In 2016, it has already £0.5 million of loans and obtained from the UK Aid Direct International development funding (UKAID), a credit line amounting £16.7 million to pursue its actions till 2020.
