Eskom is currently losing about 220 MW of imported energy from Mozambique. This is due to a technical failure on one of the inverters of the Apollo sub-station which is located in Midrand.
The company assured that its technicians are involved in the repair of equipment which should be fully functional within five days. An investigation to determine the cause of the failure is also underway.
The decrease will further deepen the country’s limited electricity supply while just emerging from a long period of massive and prolonged power cuts. Eskom which managed to avoid blackouts during the last four months hopes to solve this problem and avoid further cuts.
The company also said that the scheduled maintenance of its equipment, which also led to the limiting power supply, was in a good progress; most of it has been conducted the summer before. It also provides the return to service of Unit 2 of the Koeberg power stationwhich is to provide an additional 930 MW to national grid
