DRC to double production capacity of Inga III hydropower dam

Thursday, 13 July 2017 19:23

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), production capacity of the Inga III hydropower dam will finally range between 10,000MW and 12,000MW, thus about twice more than initially planned (4,800MW). This was revealed by Bruno Kapandji, director of the Development and Promotion Agency for the Great Inga project (ADPI-RDC).

The increase plan whose cost was not indicated aims not only to meet the country's growing demand for power but also reduce costs for construction works for the infrastructure, the official told Reuters. In this regard, consortiums running for the project, namely ProInga and Inga China, should submit by September, a joint bid to develop the infrastructure, the same source reported.

The Inga hydropower dam is located in the Bas-Congo province. On July 25, 2016, the World Bank suspended funding and technical support to the project after the government decided to take it in a different strategic direction than that agreed by the two parties earlier on.
