Senegal to produce 20% of its energy from renewable, by 2017

Wednesday, 15 June 2016 13:10

Senegal plans for 20% of its energy output by 2017 to come from renewable sources. This was announced by President Macky Sall during the ceremony for the implementation of Contour Global’s 53 MW power plant.

Oil and gas discoveries should provide a new dimension to our energy mix in addition to renewable energy which is also part of our production park. We will diversify our energy-producing sources. This energy mix will guarantee Senegal a better security and availability in terms of power supply,” said Macky Sall.

The country has in fact, with the World Bank’s group, launched a call to tender for the construction of 350 MW of solar plants.

2016 will be a special year for Senegal’s power industry as its government has planned to develop 250 MW of additional plants in this year.

Presently, the country has about 900 MW of installed capacity.
