Wednesday, 17 February 2016 19:21

Japanese company Sumitomo said it will soon build, in Mozambique and Tanzania, two gas-fired plants totaling a capacity of 350 MW.

Mozambique’s plant will be built near Maputo, the capital city, and generate 110MW. Costing $149 million, it should be operational in 2018. The infrastructure, once operational, should meet 20% of the national power demand.

As for the Tanzanian plant, it will have a capacity of 240MW and cost $308 million. To be built near Dar es Salam, it should be operational in 2018 and will be Tanzania’s biggest gas-fired power plant.

Sumitomo, which will be providing various generators, plans to build mixed plants which, in addition to gas, will use the heat generated by turbines to produce electricity. With this technology, the group will produce 50% more energy than traditional charcoal-fired plants.
