Towards addressing energy efficiency measures in companies and organisations in Uganda, the French Development Agency (AFD), has announced that it has reserved $13 million for concessional funding through its Sustainable Use of Natural Resources and Energy Finance initiative (SUNREF) programme.
The project is aimed at helping the country save energy. Therefore companies or organisations interested in buying or replace energy efficient equipment and measures in Uganda can be granted $6.5 million, Jeff Murage, SUNREF project coordinator said.
"People can access energy efficiency funds through the Uganda Energy Capitalisation Company. Funds are channelled through five banks Centenary bank, Post Bank, FINCA, Pride Microfinance and Opportunity Bank," Nelson Tashobya, Technical Officer, Solar PV / Biomass Energy at GIZ commented.
According to James Banabe, Uganda’s Commissioner for Energy 64% of the electricity produced in Uganda is being used by industries. "Over 30MW of electricity can be saved if energy saving measures are used," He said adding that the energy efficiency bill in Offing is to help Ugandans understand the energy efficiency financing measures obtainable in the country, East Africa Business Week reports.
