Manitoba Hydro International (MIH) has been selected by the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) to operate contract for its management. Peter Graham, the chief executive of the company who made the announcement revealed that MIH in addition to taking care of LEC’s management will be investing in it.
The company, under the contract, will in the mid-term be managed by MIH who will insure that performances are stable. The amended and revised management contract, signed by MIH and the Liberian government includes two sub-contracts involving LEC’s management and the implementation of Mount Coffee power plant.
Peter Graham also said the Liberian government would, in collaboration with the World Bank, establish a local management team which would work with MIH in the framework of the contract.
LEC’s goal this year is to add 30,000 consumers to the power grid. Presently, less than 10% of the Liberian population has access to electricity.
