The West African Development Bank (WADB) has granted FCFA 35 billion to energy projects in Senegal. The projects concerned by this financing are the phase 2 of the construction of the Boucle 225 KV of the National Electricity Company of Senegal (SENELEC) and the electrification of 117 villages.
25 billion francs have been allocated to the construction of the 225 KV line. This infrastructure should improve and secure the supply of electricity from SENELEC. The latter would indeed improve its voltage plan, reduce its technical losses and increase its energy transit capacity towards consumption centres.
The 117 villages, on their side, will be electrified thanks to mini photovoltaic plants. In total 15,710 additional households will be supplied bringing the percentage of rural electrification from 29% now to 60% by 2016. Furthermore, this project has the advantage of providing less expensive electricity. The operating cost of these plants is only 30 francs per kilowatt hour against 350 francs kilowatt hour in the sites supplied by power generators. 10 billion francs have been allocated to this project.
