(Ecofin Agency) - In mid-2016, construction for Namibia’s first wind farm will be launched. Innosun, subsidiary of French firm Innovent, is the one who will be in charge of this project which will be developed in Lüderitz. The infrastructure will have 21 MW of capacity.
The firm which is the first to establish a solar plant in the country already completed the environmental impact studies and will start seeking out financing, with a preference to commercial banks as their backers. This approach will distinguish itself from that for the Omburu solar project where a major portion of the funding came from Development Bank of Namibia.
Alexandre Matton, engineer at Innosun, Lüderitz is perfect for the wind power project. “Wind energy has evoloved. There had been various improvements in the sector and it became highly competitive. I think Lüderitz is one of the best places in the world for the exploitation of this technology,” he said. He adds that the mix provided by potentialities of renewable energies in the country could allow it to meet all its needs in electricity.
Namibia is the country with the highest sun radiation level worldwide, Innosun says on its website.
