Botswana will soon open a contract for the construction of a coal-powered power plant. With a capacity of 300MW, the infrastructure will be based in Morupule. With it, the country will be able to overcome the power deficit it currently faces, Minister of Mining, Energy and Water Kitso Mokaila said.
“This decision will be made public by Thursday,” the executive said adding that the construction of this plant which should begin in 2016 would extend over three years. Botswana’s power output with this infrastructure will be increased to more than 1000 MW for an approximate demand of 610 MW.
Botswana, who also faces water struggles, has had to review its economic perspectives now forecasting a growth of 2.6% thus halving the initial previsions. This as a result of the drop in prices of diamond, one of the main sources of revenue in the country, public authorities affirm.
