Nigeria: Two scientists convert plastic into fuel

Tuesday, 26 July 2016 04:27

In Nigeria, two scientists from the School of Arts and Science (SAS) of the American University of Nigeria (AUN) successfully converted plastics into fuel. According to the Daily Trust, the groundbreaking research is the fruit of Prof. Ifeoma Joseph and one of her students from Rwanda, Emmanuel Bucyannayandi.

The two scientists produced liquid oil from waste plastics with high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyproylene catalyzed by calcined eggshells. Though the cost of the experiment is yet to be estimated, the researchers said it is promising. “Renewable energy and synthetic cannot fully replace energy from crude oil for now. But instead of just relying on fossil fuels, we can have an energy mix, a distributed energy system,” Prof. Ifeoma Joseph said.

This opinion falls in line with the global trend which is in favor of the de-carbonation of the transport sector. The latter has indeed grabbed 67% of $694 billion of green bonds issued in 2016 according to a study published by Climate Bonds Initiative.
