South Africa: Eskom confident for $23.5 billion fund mobilization

Wednesday, 27 April 2016 20:01

(Ecofin Agency) - So far, Eskom has not encountered any issues regarding funds mobilization in international market. This was announced by Eskom’s power supply chief for South Africa, Brian Molefe.

“Our funding for last year is complete and most of the funding for this year is done,” he said. “We never issue less than benchmark which is anything above $500 million, so it can be $750 million or $1 billion,” he added. He however emphasized that the timing for fund mobilization would be conditioned according to market’s terms.

The company has indeed developed a five-year $23.5 billion expansion program to build new power plants and extend power transmission network. Presently, Eskom is developing three plants totaling 5620 MW of capacity and which should be operational by 2018.

The company plans to walk its first steps in DR Congo, Mozambique, Uganda, during the year.
