Senegal: Wärtsilä wins the agreement for Malicounda plant’s design

Saturday, 28 April 2018 06:05

Malicounda’s combined-cycle thermal power plant (Senegal), estimated at 130MW, will be designed and constructed by the Finnish company Wärtsilä.

The agreement was signed by the company and Melec Power Gen (MPG), independent power producer and subsidiary of Lebanese group Matelec, which got the Senegalese government's approval to implement the plant.

“This is a major energy project that is very important for Senegal. We needed a reliable and qualified partner to engineer and provide the flexible and reliable energy system, now and as our energy infrastructure evolves. With its global and Pan-African experience, Wärtsilä fully meets the project requirements,” Matelec Group’s CEO Sami Soughayar said.

Let’s note that this plant which will be set at 85 km from Dakar, is scheduled to be commissioned by 2020. It is part of the government’s strategy to boost national power capacity from the current 1, 0000 MW, as to lower electricity cost within the country whose electrification rate is 56.5%.
