The Masdar group, from Abu Dhabi, wants to carve its niche on the Moroccan renewable energies market, particularly for solar and wind power. The group is considering, as a start, participating in three big projects in these sectors.
The company is currently in discussion with Spanish Acciona, with whom they want to create a grouping to take part in the implementation of five wind farms of a capacity of 850 MW by 2020.
The Ouarzazate solar farm, the biggest in Africa, is also of interest to the Emirati group. They intend partnering with Spanish Grupo Gransolar to bid for the construction of three farms of a total capacity of 170 MW, with 70 MW in Noor IV, 80 MW in Foum El Oued and 20 MW in Boujdour. Masdar is in this case planning to create a joint venture with the group being the majority shareholder with 70% shares in the capital.
Finally, the giant is meant to be also preparing, still according to Aujourd’hui le Maroc, for an acquisition of stake in wind farms in operation as well as a wind farm in construction. The group is interested in owning 25% shares in these assets which are already controlled at 75% by a private operator and 25% by an institution.
Earlier this year in March, Masdar had already taken its first steps on the Moroccan solar power market with the supply of 17,600 solar panels for household use to 940 villages.
