Kenya’s state owned National Oil Corporation (NOC), is expected to begin 2D seismic survey on Block 14T in October as search for the location to set up camp is ongoing.
Situated in the Magadi Basin south of Block 10BB within the tertiary rift sedimentary basin in southern Kenya, the 2D seismic comes after previous activity which includes a 20,000 line km of Full Tensor Gravity Gradiometry (FTG) data in 2010 aimed at deriving a basement structure map, delineate fault-bonded anticlinal structures and horst blocks, as well as map tertiary fault systems and map volcanic.
According to the Block 14T operator’s former Managing director, Sumayya Athmani (photo), the FTG by Fugro Airbone Services follows a gas leakage geochemical study.
The survey will be carried by Chinese geophysical service company BGP Kenya in Kajiado County.
“We have already exceeded our work operation requirements having acquired geological studies, surface geological mapping, ground gravity data, 2D survey as well as a Full Tensor Gravity Gradiometry one of the very few that have been carried out in the country”, Athmani told Oil news Kenya.
NOC has before now also performed a 500km 2D seismic in the Northern part of the block. The company says it plans to drill Kenya’s first local well from a 100% local company and has previously signed a deal with the Geothermal development company to provide joint oil and gas drilling services in Kenya and the region.
