Kosmos Energy has revealed plans to develop a world-class LNG project following the discovery of another gas offshore Mauritania and Senegal.
Situated in Mauritanian waters, about 5 km northwest and 200 meters downdip of the Tortue-1 discovery well in about 2,800 meters of water, the Ahmeyim-2 was spud to a TD of 5,200 meters and came across 78 meters of net gas pay in two excellent quality reservoirs.
According to Kosmos, with the addition of the Ahmeyim-2 well results, gross resource estimate for the Tortue West structure increased from 11 Tcf to 15 Tcf due to the extension of the field area in the Cenomanian and the Albian while the gross resource estimate for the Greater Tortue Complex increased to more than 20 Tcf from 17 Tcf.
“Ahmeyim-2 is our fourth successful exploration and appraisal well and continues our 100 percent success rate in the outboard Cretaceous petroleum system offshore Mauritania and Senegal. With this well, we believe we have proven sufficient gas resource to underpin a world-scale LNG project in the Tortue West structure alone. The combination of the resource size and quality continue to support our view that Tortue is a competitive source of LNG and we are working towards commercialization,” Andrew G. Inglis, chairman and CEO of Kosmos told LNG World News.
Ever since 2012, Kosmos has owned the rights to carry out exploration in the C-8, C-12, and C-13 contract areas under a production sharing contracts with Société Mauritanienne Des Hydrocarbures et de Patrimoine Minier (SMHPM).
The company operates the Ahmeyim-2 well with 90 % equity alongside SMHPM with 10%.
