Kenya’s government signed with three European agencies, a concessional loan and grant agreements, under which it will be granted KSh22.29 billion (over $217 million) to implement water sanitization and supply projects in the country.
The fund will be used to build a new dam in Mombasa, seek new water sources and upgrade existing supply networks in Kisumu and other towns in western Kenya.
In the framework of these contracts, KSh17.3 billion (over $167 million) will be provided by the French Development Agency (AFD), KSh4.3 billion ($39 million) by the European Investment Bank and KSh600 million (about $6 million) by the European Union.
In addition, AFD will disburse about KSh14 billion (about $138 million) to boost the water production capacity at Mwache Dam, near Mombasa.
Let’s recall that these new fundings are provided in a context marked by water shortage for a few months especially in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.
