South African Airways (SAA) announced on September 5 that authorities in Hong Kong have given it three more weeks to provide financial statements, or flights to the region will be halted.
Africa’s top airline indeed failed to file its financial statements for 2014/15 and 2015/16 and should have done it today, September 6. However, the authorities have pushed the deadline to Sept 30, Tlali Tlali, SAA Spokesperson revealed.
“We are confident that we will meet all outstanding requirements. It is extremely unlikely that SAA's service on this route will be terminated,” Tlali said.
Suffering from a poor financial management, the public airline has been surviving on State subsidies amounting to R14.4 billion or $1 billion. The company’s results for 2015/16 were lowered as Public Treasury denied it an additional R5 billion of guarantees.
SAA announced last week that it plans to mobilize R16 billion ($1.1bn) from financial institutions to finance its investments and day-to-day operations.
