Guinea-Bissau: Composition of new government formed after a month of crisis at the head of the State

Wednesday, 09 September 2015 14:42

A new Bissau-Guinean government led by Prime Minister Baciro Dja was formed on 7th September, after a month of crisis prompted by a power struggle between the previous head of government Domingos Simoes Pereira and President José Mario Vaz.

The formation of a new government was made possible through an agreement with the Party for Social Renewal (PRS), second largest party in Parliament with 41 MPs out of 102 and members of the majority African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde (PAICG) rallying.

The new team has 16 ministers and 15 secretaries of State.

Among the principal portfolios, Foreign Affairs went to Rui Dia de Souza of PAIGC, Defence to a personality unknown in the political environment, Eduardo Costa Sanha, Interior to outgoing Minister Octavio Alves, and Justice to Dionisio Cadi of PRS. The minister of Finance has not yet been appointed.

The new team, which also has five women, was sworn in during a ceremony at the Office of the President on Monday evening. The new Prime Minister wants to make the reconciliation with his political family a priority while avoiding useless institutional feuds. Disagreements between the Head of State and the previous Prime Minister on many issues were at the roots of crisis which ended in Domingos Simoes Pereira being deposed on 12th August.
