In an interview with French daily Les Echos, Bernard Cambier, Director of Africa-Middle East-India zone of Renault, said the car manufacturer should produce about 400,000 cars in Morocco, in 2016.
According to Cambier, production at Renault’s two Moroccan plants should significantly increase this year. The Tangiers factory should produce more than 300,000 cars in 2016, against 230,000 in 2015. As for Somaca’s in Casablanca, its output should exceed 65,000 assembled units.
Renault Morocco’s production thus approaches that of the group in France (660,000 cars per year). It will also exceed output of plants in Romania and Turky, which produced each about 339,000 cars respectively, in 2015.
Moreover, by producing models such as the Logan, the Sandero or the Lodgy, Morocco has become an important low-cost vehicles production base for Renault. It also benefits from a favorable legal and regulatory environment, as well as of an ecosystem that promotes competitiveness.
However, according to executives from Renault, production of engines or any other mechanical parts is not actually planned in Morocco.
Let’s recall that Renault has signed in April 2016, partnership agreements with the Moroccan government to build an industrial ecosystem. With an estimated investment of €900 million, the project will generate 50,000 jobs.
