AXIAN, a responsible pan-African group operating in 5 business sectors including energy and telecoms, strengthens its commitment to creating a positive impact in Africa through its appointment as Vice Chair of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) Indian Ocean Network. AXIAN’s CEO, Hassanein Hiridjee, has also joined the Advisory Council of the Africa Business Leaders Coalition (ABLC).
AXIAN appointed Vice-Chair of the Indian Ocean Network of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)
Represented by its Group Impact & Sustainability Director, Amélie Yan-Gouiffes, AXIAN will serve a one-year term as Vice-Chair of the UNGC Indian Ocean Regional Network. The Group will utilize this opportunity to accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, focusing in particular on the 3 pillars of Population, Planet and Prosperity (3P). AXIAN Group is a participant of the UNGC initiative since 2020.
During this one-year mandate, AXIAN's mission will be to strengthen and diversify the membership of the regional network, particularly in Madagascar, the Comoros and the Seychelles, which are still under-represented. The continent is at a major turning point. Temperatures are rising faster in Africa than the global average, and the effects of climate change are felt most despite contributing less than 4% of global emissions. Mobilizing resources is vital to create an inclusive and sustainable African continent, where no one is left behind and all voices are heard. AXIAN is determined to convert crises into opportunities, deliver energy, financial and digital inclusion, and support green, fair and shared growth. With operations across 15 African countries and headquartered in Madagascar, AXIAN is uniquely positioned to connect the Indian Ocean region and Africa while also bringing its pan-African experience and perspective to international community. The positive impact of the African private sector on the 3Ps can only be enhanced by multiplying the connections between the various UNGC networks in Africa encouraging mutual learning.
The Indian Ocean network is one of 10 UNGC networks currently established on the continent, and currently consist of 49 member companies (38 in Mauritius, 9 in Madagascar and 2 in the Seychelles). As one of the founding members of the Indian Ocean regional network, established in 2020, AXIAN is proud to strengthen its commitment and leadership for creating positive change in Africa.
Hassanein Hiridjee joins the Advisory Council of the Africa Business Leaders Coalition (ABLC)
Hassanein Hiridjee, CEO of the AXIAN Group, has also joined the ABLC's Advisory Council, an initiative that stems from the UNGC's Africa strategy. The Advisory Council's 15 members and business leaders will have a direct influence on the ABLC’s strategic objectives and operational plans, and will be supported by senior executives from UNGC and Boston Consulting Group.
ABLC is the first pan-African coalition of business leaders formed to act as the unified voice of the private sector focused on tackling key challenges and driving Africa's global development. Hassanein Hiridjee has been an active member since its launch in 2022 and will serve a three-year term on the Advisory Council. Stepping into its third year, ABLC is intensifying commitments to the fight against climate change and the promotion of gender equality on the African continent.
"At AXIAN, we firmly believe that Sustainability and Business are intrinsically linked, and include tangible positive impact at the very heart of our business model. That is why we are steadfast in our commitment to the United Nations Global Compact. I am delighted to be joining the ABLC Advisory Council and glad to see Amélie Yan-Gouiffes representing AXIAN as Vice-Chair of the UNGC Indian Ocean network. Our mission is to meet the UN Secretary-General’s call for a “rescue plan for the SDGs” with concrete actions and effective results. By working together to promote the UNGC Ten Principles in the region and in Africa, we can accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. " stated Hassanein Hiridjee, CEO of the AXIAN Group.
