(Ecofin Agency) - The World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) announced an investment of about $12 million in renewable energy projects in Sao Tome and Principe. The resource will fund the National Electricity Sector Development Project, which aims to increase renewable energy production and to improve electricity supply in the archipelago.
The action will focus on the rehabilitation and extension of the capacity of the Contador hydroelectric dam. The 2.2 MW infrastructure has been in operation for 50 years. This work will increase its capacity to 3.2 MW and extend its lifespan. The project is expected to start in June 2020 and be completed in early 2022.
It is also planned to distribute 200,000 LED bulbs and 46,500 LED tubes throughout the archipelago. Financial support will also be provided for the institutional reform and planning project of the country's electricity sector.
