(Ecofin Agency) - WAEMU Commission’s head Abdallah Boureima and his ECOWAS counterpart Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on crisis and conflict prevention in West Africa, last June 5 in Lagos.
The goal is to support the WAEMU Monitoring and Early Warning Mechanism (MeVap) and to strengthen the ECOWAS Early Warning and Response System (ECOWARN). WAEMU indicated that the MeVap is a tool for anticipating and preventing crises and conflicts in the sub-region. Its objective is to enable the WAEMU Commission and the Member States to face the multiple and complex security challenges. To achieve this, WAEMU’s action must complement that of ECOWAS, which also has an early warning system. To avoid duplication, it was necessary to sign a memorandum of understanding between the two institutions.
