Mauritius: Government to establish permanent court to handle expropriation disputes

(Ecofin Agency) - Legal procedures related to land expropriations in Mauritius could get much simpler very soon. This was announced by Robbin Appaya, legal consultant of the ministry of lands and housing, during a show aired on Radio Plus. The lawyer said a permanent court handling expropriation-related disputes could soon be established in the country.

“We have a Board of Assessment but it does not address disputes and has no permanent status. I think we must create a permanent court. In fact, this has been at the center of many debates between the ministry of lands and housing and the Attorney General’s Office. Such a court could also deal with taxes, rental, and compensation issues,” Appaya said.

The project comes about a month after Mauritian authorities announced plans to use 20 thousands hectares of agricultural lands which have been leased in Mozambique since 1999  but were not being exploited.
