(Ecofin Agency) - Once again under spotlight, President Zuma from South Africa rejected on March 17, 2016, allegations of corruption which claim that the appointment of the members of his government is influenced by wealthy business family, the Guptas.

On Wednesday 16 March, Jonas Mcebicis, deputy finance minister said the Gupta family offered him the position of minister of finance against certain advantages. These claim put back on the table suspicions regarding unethical relationship between South Africa’s President and Business world. “I appoint the members of my government myself. If the Guptas approached Jonas, go ask them. And if I had appointed him, he would be minister of finance, and not deputy,” Jacob Zuma told parliamentarians. However, his claims did not calm suspicions. Just like Zuma, the Guptas rejected all allegations.

The Chamber of commerce and mine is concerned by this kind of revelation. South Africa Banks’ Association asked ANC to let the nation know of a case whereby President could have been influenced by “external sources”.

Amid the contradictory of flow of information and suspicions, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange ended Thursday with a 1% increase as rand rises from its lowest over the past ten years at the end of January.

Analysts say market’s stability is due to American Federal Reserve saying it would raise rates twice this year, against four times as rumors claimed. Also, the Central Bank of South Africa decided to increase its intervention rates by 25 base points, indicating it was in response to persisting inflation and risk of less vigorous economic growth in the mid-term.
