Senegal: Conflicts broke out between police and Diokoul’s populations

Thursday, 22 June 2017 05:03

(Ecofin Agency) - On June 20, a conflict broke out between the police and the people of Diokoul in Senegal. The latter, mainly farmers, was trying to prevent the agents of Senegindia to delineate a 1,000ha area which will be taken from them.

The conflict arose as a crowd got out to stop the agents to lay razor wire around the land given to Sengindia at the end of 2016, and this caused the police to come and calm the situation. However, things did not happen as calmly as expected.

The issue surrounding the concerned land has been present for months. Diokoul’s populations oppose the government’s decision to award the space to Senegindia, as they highly depend on it.

After the police was finally able to calm the tensions, the locals still angry, went to the town hall where they destroyed cars.
