Morocco Fishery Landings Fall 15% In 2025 As Pelagic Catches Drop

  • Morocco fishery landings fall 15% to 1.13 million tonnes in 2025
  • Pelagic, cephalopod and crustacean catches decline sharply, ONP data show
  • Revenues drop 4% to 10.11 billion dirhams amid lower landings

The total volume of fishery products from coastal and artisanal fishing marketed in Morocco reached 1.13 million tonnes in 2025, according to data compiled by the National Fisheries Office (ONP). This reported stock represents a 15% decrease compared to the 1.33 million tonnes recorded a year earlier.

According to the ONP, landings of pelagic fish, which typically account for nearly 80% of annual stocks, fell by 18% to 909,750 tonnes. During the same period, marketed catches of cephalopods and crustaceans also declined by 18% and 6% year-on-year, falling to 49,876 tonnes and 7,640 tonnes respectively.

Other categories of fishery products, including white fish, shellfish, and seaweed, all recorded an increase in catches. However, the volume gain remained insufficient to offset the overall decline.

While the ONP did not explain the reasons for this situation in its report, the underperformance of several Moroccan ports on the Atlantic Ocean, which usually handle large volumes of fishery products, may be identified. For example, the port of Dakhla recorded a 29% drop in landing volumes. This was followed by Boujdour, where landings fell by 10%, Agadir by 13%, and Essaouira by 32%.

Overall, the decline in landing volumes also resulted in a decrease in marketing revenues. These revenues fell by 4% year-on-year to reach 10.11 billion dirhams ($1.09 billion) in 2025.
