  • Government to establish national council for agricultural mechanization
  • Policy aims to expand cultivation and strengthen food security

The Algerian government plans to create cooperatives dedicated to leasing agricultural equipment to farmers, following a meeting on agricultural mechanization chaired by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Monday.

In a statement published on its website, the government said the initiative aims to ease farmers’ access to machinery and encourage an expansion of the area under cultivation. Tebboune also decided to establish a national council for agricultural mechanization, the statement added.

While the implementation timetable for these projects has not yet been announced, the decisions point to a willingness by the authorities to create conditions that support the development and wider adoption of agricultural mechanization in the coming years. This policy direction has been taking shape since last year. At the National Conference on the Modernization of Agriculture, held in Algiers on Oct. 27–28, 2025, mechanization was presented as a strategic priority to make better use of the country’s agricultural potential and strengthen food security, alongside technological innovation, smart agriculture and modern resource management.

In December, Algeria also held talks with Belarus to strengthen local production of agricultural equipment. The discussions focused in particular on the possible creation of manufacturing units for tractors and other agricultural machinery in Algeria, as part of a partnership Belarus has discussed with Algerian industrial group AGM.

While these initiatives reflect a clear political will to accelerate agricultural mechanization, the strategy is still taking shape. Its success will depend on implementation, financing and adoption by farmers. Ultimately, the challenge for Algeria will be to translate this policy direction into measurable productivity gains in the agricultural sector.
