Uganda launches “Beera Ku Guard” cybersecurity awareness campaign
Goal: train 100,000 citizens, reach 70% population
The National Information Technology Authority Uganda (NITA-U), in partnership with the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO), has launched a national campaign to raise public awareness about cybersecurity and personal data protection.
Named “Beera Ku Guard” (stay guarded, and on the lookout), the six-month initiative aims to educate citizens on best digital practices, including password management, device security, and online privacy. The campaign will use a multi-channel approach, combining television, radio, digital platforms, and community forums.
Training sessions are planned for 100,000 citizens and 500 employees from public and private institutions. The stated goal is to reach 70% of the population and enhance internet users’ vigilance against growing cyber threats.
“We cannot talk about a modern, digital Uganda without putting safety and trust at the center. 'Beera Ku Guard' is a call to action for every citizen, public servant, and private actor to safeguard personal data and use digital platforms responsibly,” said Arnold Mangeni, Director of Information Security at NITA-U.
The acceleration of digital transformation, driven by mobile financial services, online education, and e-governance, has been accompanied by a multiplication of cyber risks. According to NITA-U, while nearly 49% of Ugandans have heard of cybersecurity, only 13.6% truly understand the issues related to data protection. The campaign seeks to close this gap by providing citizens with concrete tools for self-protection.
Beyond raising awareness, the initiative is expected to establish a true culture of cybersecurity, strengthen confidence in the national digital ecosystem, and improve corporate compliance with data protection legislation. Ultimately, authorities aim to create a safer and more inclusive digital environment.
