New AAE-2 Subsea Cable to Boost Internet Links Between Asia, Africa, and Europe

New AAE-2 Subsea Cable to Boost Internet Links Between Asia, Africa, and Europe
Thursday, 12 June 2025 18:11

The AAE-2 subsea cable will enhance global internet resilience, unlock new digital growth opportunities across emerging markets, and support the next wave of technological innovation. By bridging gaps in the digital infrastructure between three continents, AAE-2 helps pave the way for a more equitable and connected global economy.

Four telecommunications providers—PCCW Global, Sparkle, Telecom Egypt, and Zain Omantel International (ZOI)—have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop the Asia-Africa-Europe-2 (AAE-2) subsea cable system jointly. This ambitious project, announced June 11, aims to create a next-generation digital corridor connecting Hong Kong and Singapore to Italy, with high-capacity terrestrial links spanning Thailand, the Arabian Peninsula, and Egypt.

Mohamed Nasr, CEO of Telecom Egypt, emphasized the strategic role of Egypt's digital infrastructure: "The construction of AAE-2 cable system is a continuation of our success stories as a global data connectivity provider and is another testament to our commitment to driving digital connections through major collaborations. We are thrilled to be embarking with PCCW Global, Sparkle, and ZOI on this transformative project that will reshape the future of digital infrastructure."

The AAE-2 initiative is designed to deliver geographically diverse, resilient, and high-performance infrastructure to meet the growing demands of global cloud services, content delivery, and digital transformation. The system will build on the success of the AAE-1 cable and integrate the latest subsea and terrestrial technologies, providing unprecedented bandwidth and low-latency connectivity across three continents.

Strategic extensions to additional regional destinations are also planned, enhancing intercontinental connectivity and expanding access in underserved markets. The initiative will significantly benefit key sectors such as finance, technology, e-commerce, and remote education, all of which rely on secure, scalable, and fast global communications.

PCCW Global CEO Frederick Chui highlighted the platform’s legacy and vision: "Following our instrumental role in the success of the AAE-1 system, we are pleased to bring our expertise to AAE-2, an advanced, high-capacity and geographically diverse subsea cable system connecting Asia and Europe.”

Existing subsea cables like AAE-1 and SEA-ME-WE-5 have become critical, but increasingly congested. Many current routes are concentrated through geo-politically sensitive or disaster-prone zones, such as the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. According to telecommunications research firm TeleGeography’s latest data, over 90% of all Europe-Asia capacity is carried by cables in the Red Sea.

In early 2024, cable damage in the Red Sea disrupted internet services in multiple African countries. AAE-2 aims to add redundancy and alternative routing through terrestrial corridors across Thailand, the Arabian Peninsula, and Egypt, improving regional and global resilience against such disruptions.

The consortium’s partnership marks a significant milestone in advancing global digital infrastructure. By combining their collective expertise and assets, PCCW Global, Sparkle, Telecom Egypt, and ZOI aim to accelerate the delivery of a future-proof subsea and terrestrial network, strengthening global traffic flows and unlocking new economic opportunities across Asia, Africa, and Europe.
