Vitel Wireless officially launched its mobile services on Thursday, October 30, marking a further step in the liberalization of Nigeria’s telecom market.
The company recently secured the 0712 number series from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), confirming its status as a full-fledged operator despite not owning its own network infrastructure.
Vitel Wireless is adopting the Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) model, which involves leasing capacity from existing carriers to offer mobile and data services under its own brand. This model allows the company to focus on customer experience, innovative pricing, and flexible service plans.
By partnering with several major Nigerian operators, Vitel Wireless will provide nationwide voice, text (SMS), and data services, offering tailored plans for users.
The entry of an MVNO marks a significant shift in Nigeria, a market of more than 220 million mobile subscriptions currently dominated by four major operators. The launch is expected to intensify competition, reduce consumer costs, and improve service quality.
If successful, Vitel’s entry could open the door for other virtual operators in Nigeria and across Africa, where MVNOs have yet to gain significant traction.
