The International Finance Corporation (IFC) will provide a 12 billion CFA franc ($21.2 million) local-currency financing package to Carrefour Médical, a Senegalese company that supplies and maintains medical equipment.
The announcement was made on Monday by Olivier Buyoya, IFC’s regional director for West Africa. The financing is part of IFC’s strategy to support African companies operating in essential sectors, including healthcare.
The funds will support several projects. Carrefour Médical plans to expand its local production of medical consumables and components, a market that remains heavily dependent on imports. The company also plans to bring online a plant that will manufacture components for dialysis kits, a product in high demand in hospitals in Senegal and across West Africa.
Part of the financing will also help complete construction of Carrefour Médical’s new headquarters in Diamniadio, Senegal. The site will include a training centre for biomedical engineers, a technical facility for equipment maintenance and monitoring, and administrative and logistics services.
Founded in 2007 by Saliou Mboup, Carrefour Médical operates in several areas, including consulting, distribution of medical equipment, installation, maintenance and the supply of consumables. While the company is primarily based in Senegal, it also works in Mali, Ivory Coast, Benin, Burkina Faso and Guinea. It is part of the Cosemad Group, which operates in real estate, agribusiness, construction, energy and industry.
IFC says the financing aims to support local production of medical equipment and help strengthen a growing regional player in the healthcare sector.
