Saint-Louis faces disruptions in 6 kg butane cylinder supply due to the absence of local storage and distribution infrastructure.
Delivery delays from Dakar have stretched from a few days to two to three weeks, affecting household cooking fuel availability.
The government plans a 400 km national gas pipeline to transport offshore production, including Greater Tortue Ahmeyim gas, to inland consumption centers.
Authorities in Senegal reported disruptions in 6 kg butane cylinder distribution in Saint-Louis due to the lack of local storage and distribution facilities, according to regional commerce services cited by APS on February 3.
Ousmane Diallo, the regional director of commerce, said wholesalers in Saint-Louis rely entirely on supplies from Dakar, making deliveries dependent on transit times from the capital. Delivery times previously measured in days now take two to three weeks, reducing cylinder availability for households.
Smaller 2.7 kg and larger 9 kg cylinders remain less affected, authorities noted. Regional officials said they have contacted relevant national authorities to restore normal supply, particularly ahead of Ramadan, a peak consumption period. A similar shortage occurred in April 2022 during Ramadan due to stock outages.
In December 2025, Senegal announced plans for a 400 km national gas transport network. The project, presented by Energy Minister Birame Souleye Diop at the MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power 2025 summit, aims to channel offshore gas, particularly from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim field, to inland consumption centers.
Authorities hope the pipeline will reduce dependency on long-distance supply from Dakar and stabilize butane availability for households across the country.
