South African group Sasol on Wednesday inaugurated an integrated hydrocarbon-processing plant in Temane, a key step toward improving Mozambique’s electricity supply. The facility is designed to deliver natural gas to the 450-MW Temane gas-fired power plant.
Sasol says gas supply is the project’s core purpose, which forms part of a Production Sharing Agreement with the Mozambican government. Authorities say the infrastructure will help increase electricity supply as national demand continues to grow.
The project integrates extraction, processing and gas delivery to the power plant. Sasol says the Temane facility was built to ensure a steady gas flow and reliable power generation for the Temane power station.
The government regularly notes that Mozambique still relies heavily on the Cahora Bassa dam and on electricity purchases from the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). Data published by Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) in 2024 also shows that urban and industrial growth is putting greater strain on the national grid.
EDM has said the country needs more gas-fired power plants, especially in the south, where demand is rising quickly.
Local media reported that more than 560,000 households gained access to electricity in 2024, including 395,622 through the national grid. According to the World Bank, national electrification rose from 31% in 2018 to nearly 60% in 2024. The Sasol facility is a key link that enables gas from the Pande-Temane fields to be used for local power generation.
