BW Energy has secured a 25-year extension of its license for the Dussafu oil field offshore Gabon, the Norwegian company said. The extension pushes the permit’s expiry from 2028 to 2053.
The extension follows an agreement with Gabon’s oil and gas authorities, BW Energy said in a statement published on its website on Tuesday, April 7. It was granted through an addendum to the existing contract.
Under the revised terms, the agreement not only extends the duration of the permit but also updates the framework for ongoing operations across the field, including all facilities and current development activities at Dussafu.
The extended license allows BW Energy to continue projects already under way, including the MaBoMo Phase 2 and Bourdon developments, which involve adding new production wells. It also covers areas yet to be developed.
“This extension is a significant milestone for BW Energy and reflects the strength of our partnership with the Gabonese authorities. It provides a robust long-term framework for continued investment and production growth in the Dussafu area,” said Chief Executive Carl K. Arnet.
The outlook is supported by recent operational performance. In early February 2026, Agence Ecofin reported that oil production from the Dussafu permit rose by around 20% in 2025 compared with the previous year, driven by the ramp-up of existing facilities and improved well performance.
Several projects are advancing in parallel. The Bourdon project has moved closer to a final investment decision (FID), with partner Panoro Energy stating in January 2026 that it had entered the project maturation phase. The development aims to produce newly identified resources using dedicated infrastructure.
The permit’s potential was further strengthened by a new discovery. In March 2025, BW Energy announced it had identified a crude oil deposit at a depth of more than 4,000 metres.
