Seriti Green has broken ground on the third phase of the Ummbila Emoyeni wind complex in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province, the traditional heartland of the country’s coal industry. The 155-MW phase is being financed by Standard Bank, Rand Merchant Bank, and ABSA.
The first two phases, totaling 310 MW, reached financial close in 2024 and August 2025, respectively. With this latest addition, 465 MW of capacity is now under construction, out of a planned 900 MW. When complete, the project will include five wind farms, a solar plant, and a battery storage facility.
About one-third of the complex’s output will power Seriti Resources’ mining operations, while the rest will be sold through NOA Group and the Energy Exchange of Southern Africa.
Seriti Green CEO Peter Venn said, in statements reported by local media IOL, that the third phase marks a major step in South Africa’s just energy transition. Around 1,200 workers are currently on site, a number expected to rise to 2,000 as construction advances.
The project’s location in a historic coal region underscores the shift toward cleaner energy, even as progress remains uneven. It also highlights the growing role of private investors in financing renewable energy and linking it to local development initiatives.
