Egypt has signed an agreement with the Emirati company K&K to conduct the final studies for the planned electricity interconnection project linking Egypt and Europe through Italy. The signing took place on Wednesday, October 15, at the government headquarters in the new administrative capital, attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Asmat, Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) chair Mona Rizk, and K&K representative Tag El Din Mustafa Saif.
The agreement covers technical, environmental, and financial studies for the project, which will connect Egypt’s power grid to Europe via a submarine cable passing through Italy.
Prime Minister Madbouly said the project reflects the government’s commitment to linking with Europe and leveraging its renewable energy resources. Minister Asmat added that the connection will enable Egypt to export part of its clean energy surplus, with a capacity of up to 3,000 MW.
This initiative follows a similar agreement signed in late September between Cairo and Athens for the GREGY project, which involves a 950 km submarine cable between Egypt and Greece. Both efforts are part of a broader Euro-Mediterranean strategy that includes the Tunisia-Italy ELMED interconnection to deliver green electricity to Europe, reinforcing Egypt’s goal to become a regional energy hub between Africa, Asia, and Europe.
