• Sungrow to build 10 GW battery factory in Egypt
• Project supports Egypt’s push to localize energy storage industry
• Egypt targets 30% renewables by 2030, eyes green exports to Europe
Chinese renewable energy group Sungrow Power Supply plans to build an energy storage battery factory in Egypt, the Egyptian presidency's spokesperson announced in a statement Sunday.
The project was announced during a meeting in Cairo between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi and Sungrow Chairman Cao Renxian.
The presidency stated that discussions focused on a plan to create an energy storage battery factory in Egypt with an annual production capacity of up to 10 gigawatts (GW). Cao highlighted his company’s expertise in manufacturing power plant components and energy storage batteries, adding that Sungrow is ready to cooperate with Egypt to localize the energy storage battery industry. He noted the country’s advanced infrastructure, favorable geographic location, and its ability to access regional and international markets.
Energy storage batteries are considered critical for the energy transition, as they help stabilize power grids, integrate intermittent renewable energy sources, and provide backup power solutions. Sungrow Power Supply is a global leader in renewable energy solutions, producing solar inverters, energy storage systems, electric vehicle chargers, and floating installations.
Egypt aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix to 30% by 2030. The North African country already has more than 25,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy projects in service or under development and seeks to position itself as a regional hub for renewables, with plans to export green electricity and green hydrogen to Europe via future Euro-Mediterranean corridors.
