Sweden’s Eco Wave Power Completes Study for 8.3 MW Plant in South Africa

Swedish developer Eco Wave Power announced on February 17 the completion of a feasibility study launched in July 2025 with Africa Great Future Development Ltd (AGFDL) to install a wave energy plant at the Port of Ngqura in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province.

According to the company, the study identifies a technical potential of about 8.3 MW of installed capacity along the port’s breakwater, subject to further assessments and regulatory approvals. The analysis covered site conditions, wave resource availability, and the preliminary configuration of the system.

The next steps include a detailed review of the results by AGFDL, followed by a joint evaluation of project structuring and regulatory procedures. At this stage, no final investment decision or required funding amount has been disclosed.

"This feasibility study marks an important milestone in our entry into the African market," said Inna Braverman, founder and chief executive of Eco Wave Power. "The results demonstrate meaningful potential at the Port of Ngqura, and we look forward to working closely with our partners to assess how this project could progress in a responsible and commercially viable manner and becoming the first wave power station on the continent of Africa."

Located near the Coega Special Economic Zone, the Port of Ngqura is operated by Transnet National Ports Authority. Its ocean exposure and existing infrastructure were identified as suitable for integrating Eco Wave Power’s onshore wave energy technology.

With more than 2,800 km of coastline, South Africa has significant theoretical potential for wave energy. Like solar and wind, wave power could contribute to diversifying an electricity mix that remains heavily dependent on coal-fired generation.
