  • Feasibility studies to prepare a 55 MW pilot storage project.
  • Initiative to guide Togo’s national roadmap for energy storage.
  • Project aligns with goals of 63% renewable capacity by 2030.

The French Development Agency (AFD) and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) have signed an agreement to finance feasibility studies for a pilot battery energy storage project in Togo.

These studies will outline the design of a project with a planned capacity of 55 MW and help draft a national roadmap for the future integration of storage solutions into the country’s power system.

“The Togo government’s ambitious energy commitments will deliver clean power, cleaner air, jobs, and opportunities to millions. This is true leadership—setting bold national goals and practical paths to reach them,” said GEAPP CEO Woochong Um.

The initiative comes as Togo’s National Energy Pact (Mission 300) identifies battery storage as a key component to support the growing share of solar energy in the electricity mix. Authorities note that renewable intermittency, particularly in the evening, still forces the country to rely on regional imports or thermal generation.

Under the Pact’s projections, Togo targets universal electricity access by 2030 and aims for renewables to account for 63% of installed capacity, up from 26% today. It also plans to expand storage capacity to 156 MWh by 2030, compared with just 4 MWh currently in operation.
