Libyan private carrier Buraq Air has signed a preliminary agreement to acquire 10 A320neo aircraft from Airbus. The memorandum of understanding was finalized at the Dubai Airshow on November 21 by the airline's General Assembly President, Fouzi Almiqalh, and Airbus Chief Commercial Officer Benoît de Saint-Exupéry.
Almiqalh said the deal marks a significant step in modernizing its fleet and expanding its network, noting the A320neo's efficiency would be central to enhancing its service. As for De Saint-Exupéry, he explained that the agreement confirms the model's role as the leading aircraft for fleet modernization and that Airbus would fully support Buraq Air's growth ambitions.
Founded in 2000 as Libya's first private airline, Buraq Air currently operates Boeing 737-800s on regional routes to Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt, and occasionally Southern Europe. The carrier, based at Mitiga International Airport near Tripoli, had suspended most operations following the civil war that began in 2011.
With security conditions improving, Buraq Air is now rebuilding its operations. It has formed a strategic partnership with Medsky Airways, a private Libyan carrier launched in 2022 by businessman Mohamed Taher Issa. Medsky operates a fleet of three Airbus A320s on routes to Valletta, Rome, Istanbul, and Tunis.
