Empower New Energy, a Norwegian company specializing in developing solar power projects for commercial and industrial businesses, announced a partnership with United Bank for Africa (UBA) on Friday to install solar units at 25 of the bank's Nigerian branches.
The project, which signals continued growth in the commercial and industrial solar sector in the West African nation, is being funded by Empower for an undisclosed sum. Renewvia Energy and Incremental Energy Solutions are partners in the implementation.
The installations will eventually supply approximately 152,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy per month. This will enable the bank to reduce its monthly carbon footprint by over 89,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO₂).
"This partnership reflects our mission to enable African businesses to access sustainable power through innovative financing," said Terje Osmundsen, CEO of Empower.
Empower is among several actors expanding Norway's presence in African renewable energy. The company has already participated in several projects in Nigeria, including electrifying the Justrite retail chain. Its model addresses the growing corporate demand for reliable power solutions amid unstable public grids and the high cost of running diesel generators.
The deal with UBA underscores the growing adoption of solar power in Africa's private sector and strengthens Empower's position in the Nigerian market.
