Niger Sends Fuel Convoy to Mali as Supply Crisis Deepens

Niger Sends Fuel Convoy to Mali as Supply Crisis Deepens

  • Niger sends 82 tankers to help Mali manage ongoing fuel disruptions
  • Delivery coordinated with Bamako for distribution across the domestic market
  • Move extends the support Niamey already provided during the 2024 crisis

Several international media outlets reported on November 25 that Niger sent 82 fuel tankers to Mali. The shipment comes as logistical disruptions continue to slow the arrival of fuel on the Malian market, leading to repeated shortages.

According to these reports, the convoy is a donation from Niger and was organized with Malian authorities, who will redirect the fuel to storage centers supplying the local market. It is one of the largest shipments Mali has received from a neighboring country in 2025.

Niger offered similar support in early 2024, when it committed to supplying diesel to Burkina Faso, Chad, and Mali during a regional fuel shortage, as noted by Ecofin Agency at the time. The country refines 20,000 barrels of crude per day at the SORAZ refinery in Zinder, producing diesel and gasoline for domestic and regional needs.

This latest delivery provides short-term relief to Mali’s supply system while the market awaits more lasting improvements. Available information does not indicate whether further assistance is planned.

Beyond the energy dimension, cooperation between Niamey and Bamako also fits within the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a confederation the two countries formed with Burkina Faso in September 2023 after leaving the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Their governments presented the alliance as a platform to deepen security, defense, and economic coordination.
