The Modern Cooking Facility for Africa (MCFA) announced on October 30 the signing of an agreement with Hanny G Investment Company Ltd, a Tanzanian firm that provides clean cooking solutions such as natural-draft stoves and non-carbonized briquettes.
This partnership, the fourth for MCFA in Tanzania, aims to promote clean cooking in schools—a key but underdeveloped segment for public health and forest conservation. The company will receive €1 million to expand its production unit in Mafinga, Iringa Region.
The funding will enable the delivery of about 4,300 clean cooking devices to schools and institutions by 2029. The initiative is expected to improve working conditions for more than 7,000 canteen workers and reduce students’ involvement in firewood collection, which remains common in rural areas.
“We are proud to partner with MCFA and Nefco to accelerate Tanzania’s clean cooking transition. This collaboration will enable us to expand access to affordable, sustainable and locally produced clean energy solutions for schools and institutions while creating economic opportunities for women and young people,” said Hanny Abdi Mbaria, Managing Director of Hanny G Investment Company Ltd.
Tanzania has around 22,000 public schools, nearly all of which still rely on firewood for meal preparation. The country’s National Clean Cooking Strategy 2024–2034 encourages institutions to adopt alternative fuels to reduce pressure on forest resources.
Globally, about 2.1 billion people still lack access to clean cooking solutions, slowing progress toward Sustainable Development Goals 7 and 13 on sustainable energy and climate action. The development of modern cooking technologies is therefore critical to improving health, education, and environmental sustainability.
By supporting local firms such as Hanny G Investment, MCFA is helping build a clean cooking market essential for improving well-being, gender equality, and energy sustainability in Tanzania and across sub-Saharan Africa, where about 900 million people still lack access to clean cooking.
